What is the N-Acetylneuraminic acid ?

The chemical N-Acetylneuraminic acid, also known as Neu5Ac or NANA, is a crystalline substance. It is an integral part of sialic acids (SAs), which are important functional sugars that play a crucial role in maintaining and improving brain health, detoxification, antibacterial action, and immune enhancement. N-Acetylneuraminic acid is biologically useful for neurotransmission, leukocyte extravasation, viral or bacterial infection, and carbohydrate-protein recognition. It is derived from N-acetylmannosamine and pyruvic acid and is an important constituent of glycoproteins and glycolipids found in animals and bacteria.

What is the CAS number for N-Acetylneuraminic acid ?

The CAS number of N-Acetylneuraminic acid is 131-48-6.

What is N-Acetylneuraminic acid (131-48-6) used for?

N-Acetylneuraminic acid is the predominant sialic acid found in human cells and many mammalian cells. Despite its small molecular weight, it contains many functional groups that make synthetic chemistry challenging. Due to its sensitivity to various reagents, specific reaction conditions are required for its synthesis. N-Acetylneuraminic acid's role in various biological processes and its presence in essential biological compounds make it a subject of study for its biochemistry, metabolism, and absorption in vivo and in vitro.

Abstract

COLOMINIC ACID, A POLYMER OF N-ACETYLNEURAMINIC ACID All acidic carbohydrate has been isolated from the culture medium of the enteric microorganism E. coli K235 L+O. This substance has been named colominic acid. N-acetylneuraminic acid, which has been isolated from the hydrolysate of colominic acid, is believed to be the monomer unit from which colominic acid is constituted. Colominic acid is not antigenic in rabbits. Tests have failed to reveal a relationship between the ability of E. coli K235 to elaborate colominic acid and its virulence in mice.
A Bifunctional Enzyme Catalyzes the First Two Steps in N-Acetylneuraminic Acid Biosynthesis of Rat Liver

N-Acetylneuraminic acid (Neu5Ac)  is an important component within the oligosaccharide residues of glycoconjugates. Neu5Ac and its activated form, CMP-Neu5Ac, are biosynthesized in rat liver by five consecutive reactions (1): UDP-N-acetylglucosamine (UDP-GlcNAc) →N-acetylmannosamine (ManNAc) → ManNAc 6-phosphate → Neu5Ac 9-phosphate → Neu5Ac → CMP-Neu5Ac.
